How Do You Measure Thermal Curtains?

Published in Curtain Measurements 3 mins read

Measuring for thermal curtains involves determining both the width and length needed to properly cover your window and provide effective insulation. Typically, you'll want your curtains to be wider and longer than the window frame.

Measuring the Width

  • Window Width: Accurately measure the width of your window frame.

  • Desired Fullness: Thermal curtains need fullness to function correctly. A general rule is to multiply the window width by 1.5 to 2. This accounts for the folds and gathers in the curtains when they are closed.

    • Example: If your window is 48 inches wide, you'll need a curtain width of 72 to 96 inches (48 x 1.5 = 72; 48 x 2 = 96). This might require two separate curtain panels.
  • Rod Placement: If you're using a curtain rod that extends beyond the window frame, measure the rod's full length, not just the window width. Use this length when calculating your total curtain width.

Measuring the Length

  • Hanging Height: Decide where you want the top of the curtain to hang. This could be at the top of the window frame, a few inches above the frame, or even closer to the ceiling to give the illusion of a taller window.

  • Desired Curtain Length: Determine where you want the bottom of the curtains to fall:

    • Sill Length: Curtains end just at the window sill.
    • Apron Length: Curtains extend a few inches below the sill.
    • Floor Length: Curtains touch the floor (or slightly "puddle" for a more dramatic effect). Add 6-12 inches to your window height.
  • Measure from Hanging Point to Desired End Point: Measure from where the top of the curtain will hang (the rod or track) to the desired length at the bottom. This is your curtain length.

Example Measurements

Let's say you have a window that is:

  • Width: 48 inches
  • Height: 60 inches

And you want:

  • Fullness Factor: 2
  • Floor-length curtains

Your measurements would be:

  • Width: 48 inches x 2 = 96 inches total curtain width. This could be achieved with two 48-inch wide panels.
  • Length: 60 inches (window height) + 6-12 inches (extra length for floor puddling) = 66-72 inches.

Important Considerations:

  • Hardware: Factor in the type of hardware you'll be using (rod, rings, hooks, etc.) and how it affects the final hanging length.

  • Panel Width: Consider the standard widths of curtain panels available for purchase. You may need to adjust your measurements slightly to accommodate these sizes.

  • Return (Side Coverage): For maximum thermal benefits, consider adding "return" which allows the curtain to wrap around the side of the window. This blocks additional light and drafts. This usually requires specialized hardware.

By following these steps, you can accurately measure for thermal curtains and ensure a proper fit for both aesthetic appeal and energy efficiency.
