How to Measure a Cushion: A Step-by-Step Guide

Published in Cushion Measurement 3 mins read

To measure a cushion, you should first measure its dimensions with the cover on, focusing on the height (or thickness), and then remove the foam insert.

Measuring a cushion accurately is essential whether you're buying a replacement cover, ordering new foam, or simply trying to determine its size. While the exact method can vary slightly depending on the cushion type (seat, back, bolster), a common approach involves measuring both the covered cushion and then examining the insert.

According to one method, as shown in a video guide, the process involves these key steps:

  1. Measure with the Cover On: Begin by measuring the cushion while the cover is still on. This gives you the overall dimensions including the effect of the stuffing and cover fabric. Pay particular attention to getting the "individual height of how big that cushion is." This refers to its thickness or loft when in its natural state. You would typically also measure the length and width at this stage.

  2. Remove the Foam: "After you have those measurements with the cover on, take the foam out of the cushion." Removing the insert allows you to inspect its condition, determine its exact shape and size without the constraints of the cover, and potentially take more precise measurements of the foam itself.

Standard Cushion Measurements

While the reference highlights height and removing foam, a complete measurement process usually includes:

  • Length: Measured across the longest side of the cushion.
  • Width/Depth: Measured across the shorter side, from front to back.
  • Height/Thickness/Loft: Measured from top to bottom. This is often taken at the fullest point when the cushion is relaxed. As the reference indicates, this is a crucial measurement.

Why Measure Both Ways?

Measuring the cushion with the cover on gives you the final, plush dimensions. Measuring the foam after removing it gives you the exact size and shape of the insert, which is critical if you need to replace just the foam or understand how the cover fits around it. The height measurement, in particular, can change significantly depending on how compressed or full the cushion is.

Quick Measurement Tips:

  • Use a flexible tape measure for curved edges or oddly shaped cushions.
  • Measure along the seams where possible for rectangular or square cushions.
  • Do not compress the cushion too much when measuring the height; let it sit naturally.

By taking measurements both with the cover on and after removing the insert, you get a comprehensive understanding of the cushion's dimensions and its components.
