What is the colour of cyclone?

Published in Cyclone Warnings 1 min read

The colour associated with a cyclone depends on the stage of warning issued. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), different colour codes are used to signify the severity and expected impact of a cyclone.

The Four Stage Warning system utilizes colour codes as follows:

Stage of warning Colour code
Cyclone Alert Yellow
Cyclone Warning Orange
Post landfall outlook Red

Therefore, a cyclone itself doesn't have one single colour. Instead, colours are used to represent the different alert levels associated with a cyclone:

  • Yellow: Indicates a cyclone alert, meaning people should be aware and prepared.
  • Orange: Indicates a cyclone warning, meaning people should take action to protect themselves and their property.
  • Red: Indicates a post-landfall outlook, signifying the aftermath and potential hazards after the cyclone makes landfall.
