Where is a Damp Proof Course (DPC) Applied?

A damp proof course (DPC) is applied at the lower parts of walls to prevent moisture from rising up through the structure.

The primary function of a DPC is to create a barrier that restricts the upward movement of ground moisture, preventing it from causing dampness within the building. This is crucial for maintaining the structural integrity of the building and ensuring a healthy indoor environment.

Importance of DPC Placement

  • Prevents Rising Damp: A correctly placed DPC is essential for stopping water from being drawn upwards through capillary action.
  • Protects Building Materials: Moisture can damage materials like brick, plaster, and timber. The DPC protects these materials, extending their lifespan.
  • Maintains Interior Health: Dampness encourages mold growth, which can lead to respiratory problems. Proper DPC installation is therefore vital for health.

Where Exactly is a DPC Located?

DPCs are not installed arbitrarily. Their placement depends on several factors such as the type of construction, ground conditions, and local building codes.

  • Typical Location: In most cases, the DPC is installed at least 150mm above the ground level and below the level of the floor, within the wall's structure.
  • Below Floor Level: It is often located directly below the floor structure so that moisture is kept below the floorboards or slab of concrete
  • Under Load Bearing Walls: The DPC will run through the thickness of the walls so that no moisture is drawn up through the structure
  • Above External Ground Level: Placement is very important and must be above the ground level outside to ensure moisture does not bridge the DPC and rise up the wall.
  • Materials: DPCs can be made from a variety of materials, including slate, bitumen, plastic and more recently membranes.

The precise position is critical to ensure the DPC operates effectively and fulfills its intended purpose of keeping the building structure dry.
