How do I add moving images to DaVinci Resolve?

Published in DaVinci Resolve Editing 2 mins read

You can add "moving images" to DaVinci Resolve by animating still photos using the zoom and rotation angle features.

Here's a simplified breakdown of how to create a basic zoom animation to give the illusion of movement:

  1. Import Your Still Image: Drag your still photo into your DaVinci Resolve timeline.
  2. Position the Playhead: Move the playhead to the beginning of the clip you want to animate.
  3. Keyframe Zoom & Rotation: In the Inspector panel (usually in the upper-right corner), find the "Transform" section. Click the keyframe button (the diamond icon) next to "Zoom" and "Rotation Angle". This sets the initial values for these properties at the start of your clip.
  4. Move to the End: Move the playhead to the end of your clip (or wherever you want the animation to finish).
  5. Adjust Zoom & Rotation: In the Inspector panel, change the "Zoom" value. For example, increase it from 1.0 to 1.25 to create a slow zoom-in effect. You can also subtly adjust the "Rotation Angle" to create a slight rotation during the zoom.
  6. Preview and Adjust: Play back the clip to see the animation. Adjust the zoom and rotation values as needed to get the desired effect. You can also adjust the placement of the keyframes to change the speed and timing of the animation.

This technique allows you to simulate camera movement and add dynamism to still images within DaVinci Resolve.
