How long after death can a person hear?

Published in Death and Hearing 1 min read

A person cannot hear anything after they die. While hearing is often the last sense to go in the dying process, once a person is dead, their brain stops functioning, rendering them unable to perceive sound.

Studies have shown that a dying brain can respond to sound even in an unconscious state, but this does not equate to hearing after death.

It's important to remember that even if a person appears unresponsive, they may still be able to hear you while they are dying. So, it's crucial to speak to them and share your feelings as if they can hear you.
