The Formation of a Death Valley Lake
Despite its reputation as one of North America's hottest, driest, and lowest-elevation locations, Death Valley experienced a rare event leading to the formation of a lake. This temporary lake appeared within the national park because of specific weather conditions over a recent period.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the formation of the lake was a direct result of:
- A deluge of storms: The area received multiple storms.
- Record amounts of rain: These storms delivered exceptionally high levels of precipitation.
- Timing: This occurred in the past six months leading up to February 2024.
These combined factors of intense storms bringing record rainfall caused water to accumulate in the valley, creating the temporary lake observed in the park.
