How Do You Put a Decal on Plastic?

Published in Decal Application 3 mins read

Applying a decal to plastic is a relatively simple process, but careful execution ensures a smooth, long-lasting application. Here's how to do it:

  1. Prepare the Decal:

    • Place the vinyl decal face down on the transfer tape (if it doesn't already have it applied).

    • Use a scraper (or a credit card) to firmly press the vinyl onto the transfer tape. This ensures the vinyl adheres well to the tape.

  2. Peel Off the Backing:

    • Carefully peel off the backing sheet from the decal. The vinyl should remain stuck to the transfer tape. If the vinyl starts to lift off the transfer tape, stop, replace the backing, and apply more pressure with the scraper.
  3. Clean the Plastic Surface:

    • Thoroughly clean the plastic surface with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and a clean, lint-free cloth. This removes any dirt, grease, or oils that could prevent the decal from adhering properly. Let the alcohol evaporate completely before proceeding.
  4. Position and Apply the Decal:

    • Carefully align the decal on the plastic surface where you want it to be placed. Precise placement is crucial, as repositioning can be difficult.

    • Once you're satisfied with the position, gently press the decal onto the plastic, starting from one edge and working your way across. Use the scraper (or credit card) to apply even pressure, smoothing out any air bubbles as you go.

  5. Remove the Transfer Tape:

    • Slowly and carefully peel the transfer tape away from the decal. Pull the tape back on itself at a sharp angle. If the vinyl starts to lift off the plastic with the transfer tape, stop, and press the vinyl back down onto the plastic with the scraper before continuing.
  6. Final Smoothing:

    • After removing the transfer tape, go over the decal with the scraper one more time to ensure it's firmly adhered to the plastic. This will help prevent peeling or lifting.

Tips for Success:

  • Temperature: Apply decals in a moderate temperature environment (between 60-80°F or 15-27°C) for optimal adhesion.
  • Practice: If you're new to applying decals, practice on a scrap piece of plastic first.
  • Patience: Take your time and be patient during each step of the process. Rushing can lead to mistakes.
  • Avoid bubbles: If you get small air bubbles, you can try to smooth them out with the scraper. For larger bubbles, use a pin to carefully prick the bubble and then smooth it out.
