How do you measure a square deck?

Published in Deck Building Squareness 2 mins read

To ensure a deck frame is square, the primary method involves measuring its diagonals. A truly square or rectangular frame will have diagonals of equal length.

Verifying Deck Squareness Using Diagonal Measurement

The most reliable way to measure for squareness is by comparing the lengths of the frame's diagonals.

The Diagonal Measurement Technique

  • Step 1: Choose Your Tool: Use a reliable measuring tool, such as a cross tape or a standard measuring tape.
  • Step 2: First Diagonal: Measure from one corner of the deck frame to the opposite corner. Note down this measurement carefully.
  • Step 3: Second Diagonal: Measure the other diagonal, from the remaining corner to its opposite corner.
  • Step 4: Compare: For your deck frame to be perfectly square or rectangular, the measurement from the first diagonal must be exactly the same as the measurement from the second diagonal.
  • Step 5: Adjust: If the two diagonal measurements are different, the frame is not square. You need to move one side of the frame until you end up with the exact same measurement, when measuring from corner to corner.
  • Step 6: Re-measure: Continue adjusting and re-measuring the diagonals until they match perfectly.

Tips for Keeping Your Deck Frame Square During Installation

  • Frequent Checks: Measure the diagonals often as you build and attach the frame components.
  • Temporary Support: You can use a stake(s) to temporary nail your frame to while installing decking. This helps keep in square the structure as you add the deck boards.
  • Accuracy Matters: Even small discrepancies in diagonal measurements can lead to issues when installing deck boards or railings.

By using the diagonal measurement technique, you can accurately determine if your deck frame is square and make necessary adjustments for a solid, true structure.
