How to Use a Small Deep Fryer?

Published in Deep Frying 4 mins read

Using a small deep fryer is relatively simple once you understand the basic steps. Here’s a guide to help you safely and effectively use your small deep fryer:

Steps for Using a Small Deep Fryer

  1. Prepare the Fryer:

    • Place the deep fryer on a flat, stable, and heat-resistant surface. Make sure it's away from water sources and flammable materials.
    • Fill the fryer with the appropriate amount of oil. Never overfill the fryer, as this can cause dangerous splattering and overflow. Check the fryer's manual for the recommended oil level. Usually, there is a fill line inside the fryer.
    • Use a high smoke-point oil suitable for deep frying, such as vegetable oil, canola oil, peanut oil, or sunflower oil.
    • Important Safety Tip: Never use water in a deep fryer.
  2. Set the Temperature:

    • Plug in the deep fryer.
    • Set the temperature to the desired level according to your recipe. Most foods are fried between 325°F (160°C) and 375°F (190°C).
    • Allow the oil to heat up. Most fryers have an indicator light that will turn on when heating and turn off when the oil reaches the set temperature.
  3. Prepare the Food:

    • While the oil is heating, prepare your food for frying. Ensure food is dry before placing it in the fryer to avoid excessive splattering. Patting it dry with paper towels helps.
    • Consider breading or battering the food to achieve desired texture and flavor.
  4. Fry the Food:

    • After the temperature indicator light goes out, open the lid (if applicable) and very gently lower the basket into the oil. Lowering it too quickly could cause the fryer to overflow.
    • If your fryer doesn't have a basket, carefully add the food to the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd it. Overcrowding can lower the oil temperature and result in soggy food. Fry in batches for best results.
    • Wait for one minute with the lid open (if applicable) then close the lid.
    • During cooking, it is normal for the temperature light to switch on and off. This indicates the thermostat is maintaining the set temperature.
  5. Monitor and Cook to Perfection:

    • Cook the food for the recommended time, following your recipe's instructions.
    • Keep a close eye on the food as it cooks, and adjust cooking time as needed to achieve the desired level of crispness and browning.
  6. Remove and Drain the Food:

    • Once the food is cooked, carefully lift the basket out of the oil and allow the excess oil to drain back into the fryer.
    • If you don't have a basket, use a slotted spoon or tongs to carefully remove the food.
    • Place the fried food on a wire rack lined with paper towels to further drain any excess oil.
  7. Season and Serve:

    • Season the fried food immediately after removing it from the fryer, while it's still hot. Salt, pepper, and other seasonings will adhere better at this stage.
    • Serve and enjoy your freshly fried food!
  8. Cool Down and Clean:

    • Allow the oil to cool completely before draining it.
    • Refer to your fryer's manual for cleaning instructions. Never pour hot oil down the drain.
    • Most small deep fryers are easy to disassemble and clean.

Important Safety Tips

  • Never leave a deep fryer unattended while in use.
  • Keep children and pets away from the fryer.
  • Always use oven mitts or heat-resistant gloves when handling the fryer.
  • In case of a fire, never use water to extinguish it. Use a fire extinguisher designed for grease fires or baking soda.
  • Regularly clean your deep fryer to prevent the buildup of grease and food particles.
  • Change the oil regularly for optimal frying results and food safety.
