What is PPM and ICD?

Published in Definitions and Medical Devices 3 mins read

PPM stands for Parts Per Million, a unit of concentration, while ICD stands for Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator, a medical device.

Parts Per Million (PPM)

PPM is a way of expressing very dilute concentrations of substances. It signifies the number of parts of a substance per million parts of the total mixture. It's often used when dealing with small amounts of pollutants, contaminants, or specific ingredients.

  • Definition: 1 PPM means 1 part of a substance per 1,000,000 parts of the mixture.
  • Example: If a water sample contains 5 PPM of lead, it means that for every 1 million parts of water, there are 5 parts of lead.
  • Usage: Commonly used in environmental science (e.g., measuring air and water pollution), chemistry, and food science.
  • Conversion: PPM can be converted to other units like milligrams per liter (mg/L) in aqueous solutions, where 1 PPM is approximately equal to 1 mg/L (assuming the density of the solution is close to 1 g/mL).

Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD)

An ICD is a small, battery-powered device implanted in patients at risk of life-threatening arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats). Its primary function is to monitor the heart's rhythm and deliver an electrical shock (defibrillation) or pacing if it detects a dangerously fast or irregular heartbeat, restoring a normal rhythm.

  • Purpose: To prevent sudden cardiac death in individuals with a high risk of ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia.
  • Mechanism: Continuously monitors the heart's electrical activity. If a life-threatening arrhythmia is detected, the ICD can deliver:
    • Pacing: Deliver small, rapid electrical impulses to try to restore a normal heart rhythm.
    • Cardioversion: Deliver a low-energy shock to reset the heart's rhythm.
    • Defibrillation: Deliver a high-energy shock to reset the heart's rhythm.
  • Implantation: Surgically implanted under the skin, usually near the collarbone. Thin wires (leads) are threaded through blood vessels to reach the heart.
  • Benefits: Significantly reduces the risk of sudden cardiac death in high-risk patients.
  • Limitations: Can deliver painful shocks (though newer ICDs have better programming to minimize unnecessary shocks), requires regular checkups, and battery replacement every 5-7 years.
