What is the Vazirani Technique?

Published in Dental Anesthesia 1 min read

The Vazirani-Akinosi nerve block technique is an established and reliable method for achieving anesthesia in the mandible. It is particularly useful when the standard Halstead's technique fails to provide adequate anesthetic effect.

In more detail, the Vazirani-Akinosi technique involves anesthetizing the mandibular nerve by injecting anesthetic solution medial to the ramus of the mandible. This approach is often considered an alternative when traditional inferior alveolar nerve blocks are unsuccessful due to anatomical variations or patient anxiety that prevents proper positioning for the standard injection.

The technique boasts a high success rate and can be particularly advantageous in cases where a patient has limited mouth opening (trismus), making access to the inferior alveolar nerve via traditional methods difficult or impossible. The injection site is more accessible in such cases.

Essentially, the Vazirani-Akinosi technique provides an alternative pathway to anesthetize the mandibular nerve, contributing to successful pain management during dental procedures.
