Understanding Cavities

How Do I Clean My Cavity?

You cannot clean a cavity at home. A cavity, or tooth decay, is a hole in your tooth caused by decay. Only a dentist can remove and repair a cavity. Home remedies and improved brushing techniques cannot fix an existing cavity.

Cavities are holes in your teeth caused by the breakdown of tooth enamel due to bacteria and acids produced from sugars and starches. The process begins with plaque buildup, which eventually erodes enamel, forming a cavity.

What You Can't Do at Home

  • You cannot remove a cavity by brushing. While brushing is crucial for preventing cavities, it's ineffective against existing cavities.
  • Home remedies mentioned in some sources (oil pulling, aloe vera, licorice root, etc.) do not cure cavities. These may have some beneficial oral hygiene properties but will not repair a cavity.
  • Increased brushing in one area will not remove a cavity. This could even damage your enamel further.

What You Should Do

  • See a dentist immediately. A dentist will diagnose the cavity's severity and provide appropriate treatment, which typically involves cleaning the decayed area and filling it with a dental material.
  • Maintain excellent oral hygiene. This includes brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and using mouthwash (as directed by your dentist).
  • Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks. These contribute to the formation of cavities.
  • Consider fluoride treatments. Your dentist might recommend fluoride treatments to strengthen enamel and potentially reverse very early stages of decay.

Preventing Future Cavities

The following are proven methods to help prevent cavities:

  • Regular dental checkups and cleanings: These allow dentists to detect and address cavities early.
  • Proper brushing technique: Brush gently in small circular motions for at least two minutes, twice a day.
  • Flossing daily: This removes plaque and food particles from between teeth.
  • Healthy diet: Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks.
  • Fluoride toothpaste: Use a fluoride toothpaste to strengthen enamel.

While numerous home remedies and techniques are suggested online, remember that only a dentist can effectively treat an existing cavity. Focus on prevention and regular dental visits to maintain optimal oral health.
