What is Baby Bottle Tooth Decay?

Published in Dental Health 2 mins read

Baby bottle tooth decay, also known as nursing caries, is tooth decay in infants and young children caused by prolonged exposure of the teeth to sugary liquids.

Understanding Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

This condition arises when a baby frequently or continuously sips on beverages containing sugars, such as milk, juice, or formula, especially while sleeping. The sugars in these liquids feed bacteria in the mouth, which then produce acids that attack tooth enamel. Because saliva production decreases during sleep, the protective effect of saliva is reduced, leading to increased risk of tooth decay.

Causes of Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

  • Sugary Drinks: Drinks other than water left in the bottle.
  • Prolonged Exposure: Extended periods of sipping on sugary liquids, particularly when sleeping.
  • Decreased Saliva: Reduced saliva flow during sleep diminishes its protective effect against acids.

Examples of Sugary Drinks

  • Milk (including breast milk)
  • Juice
  • Formula
  • Soda

Prevention

Here are some ways to prevent baby bottle tooth decay:

  • Avoid putting your child to bed with a bottle filled with liquids other than water.
  • Clean your child's gums and teeth after each feeding.
  • Limit sugary drinks.

Symptoms and Signs

  • White spots on the teeth.
  • Brown spots on the teeth.
  • Cavities.
