Understanding Diastema

Published in Dental Terminology 2 mins read

The space between teeth is clinically known as Diastema.

As per the reference, Diastema is the clinical term for a gap between teeth. This term is used to describe any space, large or small, located between two adjacent teeth.

Where Diastema Occurs

While gaps can develop anywhere in your mouth, diastema is most common between your two front teeth (midline diastema). However, a diastema can appear between any two teeth in either the upper or lower jaw.

  • Midline Diastema: This is the most frequently observed type, specifically referring to the space between the two upper central incisors (front teeth).
  • Other Diastemas: Gaps can also occur between molars, premolars, or canines.

Factors Contributing to Diastema

Several factors can lead to the development of a diastema:

  • A mismatch between the size of the teeth and the size of the jaw bone.
  • Missing teeth, which can cause surrounding teeth to shift.
  • Undersized teeth.
  • An oversized labial frenum (the piece of tissue connecting the upper lip to the gum), which can sometimes extend between the two front teeth.
  • Certain habits, such as thumb sucking or tongue thrusting.
  • Periodontal disease, which can lead to bone loss and teeth migration.

Regardless of the cause or location, any noticeable gap between teeth is clinically termed a diastema.
