What are the Reg Desert Landforms?

Published in Desert Landforms 1 min read

Regs are a type of desert landform characterized as extensive stony plains or gibber plains.

Understanding Regs

Based on geographical descriptions, regs are widespread areas within deserts. Their key distinguishing feature is their surface composition.

  • Surface Cover: The surface of a reg is covered by a layer known as desert pavement. This pavement consists primarily of coarse gravel and stones.
  • Desert Varnish: The stones and gravel on the surface often feature a coating of dark “desert varnish.” This glossy, dark surface layer is formed by the accumulation of oxides, particularly oxides of iron, over long periods.

In essence, when you encounter a vast, flat area in a desert dominated by a surface of tightly packed stones and gravel, often darkened by desert varnish, you are likely looking at a reg. These landforms are distinct from sandy deserts (ergs) or rocky plateaus (hamadas).
