How do I change my Touch ID password?

Published in Device Security 1 min read

You cannot directly change your Touch ID password. Touch ID uses your fingerprint as a biometric authentication method, not a password. Instead, you need to change your device's passcode, which is used as a backup authentication method if Touch ID fails or is unavailable. Your fingerprint authentication will then continue to work alongside the new passcode.

Here's how you change your device passcode according to the reference:

  1. Go to your device settings.
  2. Locate and select "Touch ID & Passcode" (or similar wording, depending on your device's operating system version).
  3. Enter your current passcode when prompted.
  4. Scroll down and tap "Change Passcode."
  5. Re-enter your old passcode when prompted.
  6. Enter your new passcode and verify it.
  • Changing your device passcode does not remove the fingerprints associated with your Touch ID.
  • If you want to remove or add fingerprints associated with your Touch ID, you can do that within the "Touch ID & Passcode" settings too.

By following these steps, you will effectively change the passcode that is used in conjunction with your Touch ID.
