How to Fill an Insulin Syringe

Published in Diabetes Care 2 mins read

Filling an insulin syringe accurately is crucial for managing diabetes. Here's a step-by-step guide:

1. Gather Your Supplies

  • Insulin vial
  • Insulin syringe (the correct size is essential; your doctor or pharmacist will advise)
  • Alcohol swab

2. Prepare the Vial and Syringe

  1. Clean the top of the insulin vial with an alcohol swab and let it air dry.
  2. Remove the cap from the syringe. Do not touch the needle.

3. Draw Air into the Syringe

  1. Hold the syringe with the needle pointing upwards.
  2. Pull back the plunger to the mark on the syringe that corresponds to your prescribed insulin dose. This will draw air into the syringe. This air will be used to displace the insulin later. Refer to the video, "How to Inject Insulin with a Syringe - YouTube," for a visual demonstration.

4. Inject Air into the Vial

  1. Insert the needle into the rubber top of the insulin vial.
  2. Slowly push the air from the syringe into the vial.

5. Withdraw Insulin

  1. Turn the vial and syringe upside down. (Needle still in the vial)
  2. Keeping the needle below the insulin, slowly pull back the plunger to draw the correct dose of insulin into the syringe. The Mount Sinai website also provides detailed instructions on this process.

6. Remove Air Bubbles

  1. Tap the syringe gently to bring any air bubbles to the top.
  2. Slowly push the plunger to expel the air bubbles. Be careful not to lose any insulin. Methods for removing air bubbles are also described on HealthXchange.

7. Prepare for Injection

  1. Once the syringe contains the correct dose of insulin, carefully remove the needle from the vial.
  2. Double-check the dose one more time.

Important Note: Always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions carefully. This guide provides general information, and specific techniques may vary depending on the type of insulin and syringe you are using. Consult your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns.
