The alimentary canal, or digestive tract, is a long tube that runs from your mouth to your anus. It's responsible for breaking down the food you eat into nutrients your body can absorb. This vital pathway includes several key organs:
- Mouth: Where digestion begins with chewing and saliva.
- Esophagus: A tube connecting the mouth to the stomach.
- Stomach: Where food is churned and mixed with digestive juices.
- Intestines (Small and Large): Where most nutrient absorption occurs.
- Anus: The exit point for waste products.
An adult's digestive tract is remarkably long, measuring approximately 30 feet (9 meters). This extensive length allows ample time for the complete digestion and absorption of nutrients from our food.
