The diphtheria vaccine is typically combined with vaccines for tetanus and whooping cough (pertussis). There are two main types of diphtheria vaccines:
- DTaP vaccine: This vaccine is for infants and children and protects against diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough.
- Tdap vaccine: This vaccine is for preteens, teens, and adults and protects against diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough.
The letter "P/p" in DTaP and Tdap indicates that they also protect against pertussis.
The diphtheria vaccine can also be administered in combination with tetanus only, called DT or Td vaccine, depending on the age of the individual.
