What is an S12 Disability?

Published in Disability Sports Classification 1 min read

An S12 disability, within the context of sports classifications for athletes with visual impairments, refers to athletes who have a higher visual acuity than those competing in the S/SB11 sport class and/or have a visual field of less than 5 degrees radius.

In simpler terms, S12 athletes have some degree of vision, but it's limited compared to those with less severe visual impairments classified as S13. Their vision could be better than those in S11 (who have very low visual acuity or no light perception), but their field of vision is restricted to a narrow area. This impacts their ability to participate in sports and requires specific adaptations and classifications to ensure fair competition.

Therefore, the S12 classification signifies a specific range of visual impairment, allowing these athletes to compete equitably against others with similar levels of visual challenges.
