How to Extend a Volume Partition

Published in Disk Management 2 mins read

To change a volume partition by extending it, you can use the built-in Disk Management tool in Windows. This process allows you to increase the size of an existing partition using adjacent unallocated space on the disk.

Steps to Extend a Volume Partition

Follow these steps, as outlined in the reference, to extend a partition:

  1. Right-click Computer (or This PC on newer Windows versions) and select Manage. This opens the Computer Management window.
  2. Double-click Storage in the left-hand pane.
  3. Double-click Disk Management. This will display a graphical view of your disks and partitions.
  4. In the list or graphical view, right-click the partition to expand and select Extend Volume. Note that the Extend Volume option is only available if there is unallocated space immediately to the right of the partition you wish to extend.
  5. Follow the prompts in the Extend Volume Wizard to specify how much space you want to add to the partition, and click Finish.
  6. Close the Computer Management window.

Once these steps are completed, your selected volume partition will be resized to include the additional space you specified.
