What is True Tone?

Published in Display Technology 2 mins read

True Tone is a technology found in certain Apple devices like Mac computers, Studio Displays, and Apple Pro Display XDR that dynamically adjusts the color and intensity of the display to match the ambient lighting conditions in your environment. This makes the screen appear more natural and comfortable to view, regardless of the surrounding light.

How True Tone Works

True Tone uses advanced multichannel sensors to detect the color and intensity of the ambient light. Based on this information, the system subtly adjusts the white balance and color temperature of the display. The goal is to make the screen appear consistent and natural, as if you were looking at a printed page under the same lighting conditions.

Benefits of True Tone

  • Improved Viewing Comfort: By adapting to the ambient light, True Tone reduces eye strain and makes the display more comfortable to view for extended periods.
  • More Natural Colors: Colors on the screen appear more accurate and consistent with how they would look in the real world, enhancing the overall viewing experience.
  • Consistent Appearance: Whether you are in a brightly lit office or a dimly lit room, True Tone helps maintain a consistent visual experience on your display.

Devices with True Tone

As of today, True Tone technology is available on the following Apple devices (This is not an exhaustive list):

  • Mac computers
  • Studio Display
  • Apple Pro Display XDR
  • iPhones
  • iPads
