How to Make a Natural Antibacterial Spray?

Published in DIY Cleaning 3 mins read

Making your own natural antibacterial spray is easy and a great alternative to chemical-laden commercial products. Here's a simple recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 100ml Distilled Water
  • 10 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
  • 5 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil
  • 5 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
  • 5 drops Lemon Essential Oil
  • (Optional) Small squirt of Liquid Castile Soap

Instructions:

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a clean spray bottle (preferably dark glass to protect the essential oils from light), combine the distilled water, tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil, peppermint oil, and lemon oil.
  2. Add Castile Soap (Optional): If you want a foamier spray, add a small squirt of liquid castile soap. This can also help the oils emulsify better in the water, though it's not strictly necessary.
  3. Shake Well: Secure the spray bottle lid and shake vigorously to ensure the essential oils are properly dispersed in the water. Always shake before each use as the oils may separate.
  4. Use: Spray the mixture on surfaces you want to disinfect, such as countertops, doorknobs, and cutting boards. Let it sit for a minute or two, and then wipe clean with a damp cloth if needed.

Important Considerations:

  • Distilled Water: Using distilled water minimizes the risk of introducing bacteria or other contaminants into your spray.
  • Essential Oil Quality: Choose high-quality, 100% pure essential oils for the best antibacterial properties and safety.
  • Citrus Oils & Sunlight: Lemon oil (and other citrus oils) can cause photosensitivity. Avoid spraying this mixture directly on skin before sun exposure.
  • Patch Test: Before using on a large surface, test the spray on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure it doesn't damage the material.
  • Storage: Store the spray in a cool, dark place to prolong its shelf life.

Why These Essential Oils?

  • Tea Tree Oil: Known for its powerful antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties.
  • Eucalyptus Oil: Possesses antibacterial and antiviral properties, and a refreshing scent.
  • Peppermint Oil: Contains antibacterial properties and provides a cooling and invigorating aroma.
  • Lemon Oil: Offers antibacterial and antiseptic qualities, and a clean, uplifting scent. It is also a great natural degreaser.

Note: While this spray has antibacterial properties, it is not a substitute for proper hygiene practices like handwashing.
