How do you make a portable hand warmer?

Published in DIY Projects 2 mins read

You can create a portable hand warmer using readily available materials. Here's a simple method:

Materials:

  • Iron filings (approx. 1 1/2 tablespoons or 30 grams)
  • Salt (1 1/2 tablespoons)
  • Sodium polyacrylate (1 1/2 tablespoons)
  • Warm water (1 1/2 tablespoons, NOT hot)
  • One 3x5 inch zip-top bag
  • One 4x6 inch zip-top bag

Instructions:

  1. Combine Ingredients: Place the iron filings, salt, and sodium polyacrylate into the 3x5 inch zip-top bag.

  2. Add Water: Carefully add the warm water to the bag.

  3. Remove Air and Seal: Gently remove as much air as possible from the bag, then securely seal it.

  4. Double Bag: Place the sealed 3x5 inch bag inside the larger 4x6 inch zip-top bag for added protection against leaks.

How it Works:

This hand warmer utilizes a chemical reaction. The iron filings oxidize (rust) when exposed to oxygen, generating heat. The salt acts as a catalyst to speed up the rusting process. Sodium polyacrylate absorbs the water and forms a gel, which helps distribute the heat more evenly and prevents leaks.

Important Considerations:

  • Safety: Supervise children when making and using this hand warmer. Although the materials are generally safe, avoid ingestion.
  • Temperature: Ensure the water is warm, not hot. Hot water can damage the bag and potentially cause burns.
  • Disposal: Once the chemical reaction is complete and the hand warmer no longer produces heat, dispose of it responsibly.
  • Reusable? This hand warmer is generally not reusable. The iron filings will eventually be fully oxidized.
