How to Collect a DNA Sample?

Published in DNA Collection 2 mins read

Collecting a DNA sample, particularly using a cheek swab, is a straightforward process. The primary method involves using a buccal swab to gather cells from the inside of your mouth. Here's how to do it:

Steps for Collecting a DNA Sample with a Buccal Swab

  1. Prepare: Ensure you have a clean buccal swab and a collection tube ready.
  2. Swab Placement: Place the tip of the swab into your mouth.
  3. Cheek Rubbing: Rub the swab against the inside of your cheek for approximately 6 times, ensuring good contact with the tissue. This step is crucial for collecting enough cells for analysis.
  4. Removal: Carefully remove the swab from your mouth.
  5. Transfer to Tube: Insert the swab tip into the opened collection tube.
  6. Detaching the Tip: Push on the back end of the swab stick so that the swab tip detaches from the stick and remains inside the tube. This helps preserve the collected sample.
  7. Secure the Tube: Close the tube tightly to prevent contamination and ensure the sample is secure.

Important Considerations

  • Cleanliness: Ensure your hands and the work surface are clean.
  • Pre-Collection: Avoid eating, drinking, smoking, or using oral hygiene products for at least 30 minutes before collecting a DNA sample to avoid interference.
  • Storage: Follow specific instructions provided with your collection kit for storing and transporting the sample.

Following these steps helps to ensure that the DNA sample collected is suitable for analysis.
