How Do I Change Apps on Dock?

Published in Dock Customization 2 mins read

You can change apps on your Dock by adding new ones, removing existing ones, or rearranging their order.

Understanding Your Dock

The Dock is a central place on your desktop for quick access to your most used applications and documents. Changing the items on your Dock allows you to customize it to your workflow.

How to Change Apps on Your Dock

Modifying the applications visible and organized on your Dock is a straightforward process involving simple drag-and-drop actions.

Adding Apps to the Dock

To make an application easily accessible from the Dock, you need to add it.

  • Drag apps from your Applications folder, Finder windows, or even the Launchpad to the left side of (or above) the line that separates the recently used apps. This line is a visual divider, typically towards the right end of the Dock, separating permanently added apps from temporary icons of recently opened applications.

Removing Apps from the Dock

If you no longer need an app readily available on your Dock, you can easily remove its icon.

  • Drag the item out of the Dock with your mouse or trackpad. Continue dragging until "Remove" is shown next to the icon. Once you see the "Remove" text, release the mouse or trackpad button, and the icon will disappear from the Dock. Note: This does not uninstall the application from your computer, only removes its shortcut from the Dock.

Rearranging Apps on the Dock

You can change the order of apps on your Dock to place your most important ones within easy reach.

  • Drag an item to a new location within the Dock. As you drag, other icons will shift to make space. Release the item when it is in your desired position.

By following these simple steps, you can easily customize your Dock to better suit your needs and improve your workflow.
