How Do I Exclude a Header From Certain Pages?

Published in Document Formatting Headers 4 mins read

To exclude a header (or footer) from specific pages in your document, you need to divide your document into sections using section breaks. Each section can have its own unique header and footer, or none at all. The key is to break the link between the header/footer of the section you want to modify and the previous section.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Insert a Section Break:

    • Click or tap where you want the new page without the header or footer to start. This is typically at the end of the page before the one you want to change.
    • Go to the Layout tab in your word processing software.
    • Find the Breaks option.
    • Select Next Page from the Section Breaks options. This creates a section break and starts the content on a new page, marking the beginning of a new section. Documents are typically one section by default; now you have at least two.
  2. Access Header/Footer Area:

    • Double-click the header or footer area (near the very top or very bottom) of the page in the new section (the page that starts after the section break) to open the Header & Footer tools or tab.
  3. Break the Link to the Previous Section:

    • Look for the Link to Previous option in the Header & Footer tab. This feature is usually turned on by default when you create a new section break, meaning the header/footer of the new section is linked to and mirrors the previous one.
    • Click or tap Link to Previous to turn off the link between the current section and the previous section. When the link is broken, the header/footer content in this new section can be changed or removed independently of the previous section.
  4. Remove the Header (or Footer):

    • Now that the link is broken, you can delete the content of the header (or footer) in the current section. Simply select the text or images in the header area and press the Delete key.
    • The header will be removed from the pages in this new section without affecting the header in the preceding section.

If you need the header to reappear on a later page, you'll need to insert another "Next Page" section break at the end of the section where you don't want the header, and then turn off "Link to Previous" for the new section after that. You can then add a new header to that subsequent section.

Understanding sections is crucial because they allow for different page formatting options, including unique headers and footers, page numbering, columns, and more, within a single document. By inserting section breaks and managing the "Link to Previous" setting, you gain granular control over your document's layout.

Key Steps at a Glance:

Step Action Purpose
Insert Section Break Layout > Breaks > Next Page Create a new formatting section on a new page
Open Header/Footer Double-click header/footer area (in new section) Access header/footer tools
Turn Off Link Select "Link to Previous" (in Header/Footer tab) Allow independent header/footer content in new section
Delete Header/Footer Select and delete content Remove the header/footer from the new section

By following these steps, you can effectively manage which pages display headers and footers in your document.
