How to Keep Painted Drawers From Sticking

Published in Drawer Maintenance 2 mins read

Painted drawers can sometimes stick due to friction, paint buildup, or surface irregularities on the runners. A common and effective way to address this is by using wax.

Addressing Sticking Painted Drawers

If your painted drawers are sticking, particularly if you have previously attempted to use wax, the sticking might be caused by residue or improper application.

Here is a method based on a common technique, refined by practical advice:

  • Clean Off Old Residue: If wax or other substances were previously applied, grab a metal scraper and try to scrap the wax off the drawer runners. This removes any old, uneven build-up that might be causing friction.
  • Smooth the Surface: After removing the old wax, give the runners a good sanding to smooth everything over. Use fine-grit sandpaper to ensure the surfaces that slide against each other are as smooth as possible. This reduces friction points.
  • Apply Fresh Wax Correctly: Once the runners are clean and smooth, then try the wax again. The key is in the application: don't melt the wax, just give it a light rubbing along the runners. A solid block of paraffin wax or even a candle can be used. Lightly rubbing transfers just a thin layer of wax, creating a smooth, low-friction surface for the drawer to slide on.

This process of cleaning, smoothing, and applying a fresh, light layer of wax directly addresses the sticking issue by reducing friction between the drawer and its housing.

By following these steps, focusing on smoothing the runners and applying a thin, rubbed layer of wax, you can effectively prevent painted drawers from sticking.
