What is the Procedure for Ceftriaxone?

Published in Drug Administration 2 mins read

The procedure for ceftriaxone administration involves dissolving and injecting the medication according to specific guidelines to ensure efficacy and minimize discomfort.

Ceftriaxone Administration Procedure

Ceftriaxone is typically administered via intramuscular injection. Here's the step-by-step procedure:

  1. Reconstitution:

    • Dissolve 1g of ceftriaxone in 3.5ml of 1% Lidocaine Injection BP. This step is crucial for reducing pain at the injection site.
  2. Injection Site Selection:

    • Choose a relatively large muscle for the injection. Suitable sites include the upper outer quadrant of the gluteus maximus (buttocks) or the vastus lateralis (thigh). The injection should be administered deep intramuscularly.
  3. Injection Technique:

    • Clean the injection site with an antiseptic swab.
    • Use a sterile needle and syringe to draw up the reconstituted ceftriaxone solution.
    • Insert the needle deeply into the selected muscle at a 90-degree angle.
    • Aspirate to ensure the needle is not in a blood vessel. If blood is aspirated, withdraw the needle and repeat the procedure at a different site with a new needle.
    • Inject the solution slowly and steadily.
    • Withdraw the needle and apply gentle pressure to the injection site with an antiseptic swab.
  4. Dosage Considerations:

    • Do not inject more than 1g at one site. If a higher dose is required, divide the dose and administer it into separate injection sites.

Important Considerations

  • Always follow the prescribing physician's instructions regarding dosage and frequency.
  • Use proper sterile techniques to minimize the risk of infection.
  • Be aware of potential allergic reactions and have appropriate emergency measures available.
  • Lidocaine is used to reduce pain. Make sure the patient does not have any allergies to Lidocaine.
  • Rotate injection sites to prevent tissue damage.
