How to Use Paper Drywall Tape?

Published in Drywall Finishing 3 mins read

Here's how to use paper drywall tape for finishing seams and corners:

Preparation is Key

Before applying the tape, ensure the drywall joint is properly filled with a layer of drywall compound (also known as mud). This is crucial for the tape to adhere correctly.

Applying Paper Drywall Tape

Paper drywall tape is primarily used for finishing flat seams and inside corners. Here's a step-by-step guide:

For Inside Corners

  1. Pre-crease the Tape: Fold a strip of paper drywall tape lengthwise, creasing it firmly to form a corner. This crease will help it fit snugly into the corner.
  2. Apply Compound: Place a layer of drywall compound along the inside corner. The mud should be thick enough to support the tape but not excessively thick.
  3. Embed the Tape:
    • Position the creased tape into the corner over the compound.
    • Using a utility knife, carefully pull it along the tape.
    • Apply light strokes while embedding it into the mud.
    • This process pushes out any air bubbles trapped beneath the tape.
  4. Remove Excess Mud: Wipe away any excess drywall compound that squeezes out from underneath the tape with your knife.

For Flat Seams

  1. Apply Compound: Apply a layer of drywall compound to the seam.
  2. Embed the Tape: Place the paper tape directly over the wet mud.
  3. Press into Compound: Use a taping knife to embed the tape into the mud, working from the center outwards, and pushing out any air bubbles.
  4. Remove Excess Mud: Remove any excess mud with a taping knife.

Tips for Success

  • Use the Right Tool: A utility knife is best for embedding tape in corners, while a taping knife is ideal for flat seams.
  • Avoid Over-Mudding: Too much mud can cause the tape to slide or buckle, especially in corners.
  • Keep it Smooth: Aim for a smooth finish with minimal air bubbles or wrinkles.
  • Allow to Dry: Let the first coat of mud and tape dry completely before applying a second or third coat.

Benefits of Using Paper Drywall Tape

  • Strong and Durable: Provides a strong joint reinforcement against cracking.
  • Excellent for Corners: The creased version is well-suited for precise and sharp corners.
  • Good Adhesion: When properly embedded, it bonds well with the drywall compound.

By following these steps, you can effectively use paper drywall tape to achieve a smooth, professional finish on your drywall projects.
