How to Do DTF Shirt?

Published in DTF Printing 4 mins read

Creating a DTF (Direct-to-Film) shirt involves printing your design onto a special film, applying a powdered adhesive, and then heat pressing the design onto your garment. Here's a step-by-step guide:

Steps to Create a DTF Shirt:

  1. Prepare Your Workspace: Ensure you have a clean, well-ventilated area to work in. This includes having ample space for your heat press, DTF transfers, and garments.

  2. Prepare the Design:

    • Create or Obtain Your Design: Use graphic design software (like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator) to create your design or source a pre-made DTF design.
    • Mirror the Image: It's crucial to mirror your image before printing, as it will be reversed when transferred to the shirt. Most DTF printing software will have a mirroring option.
    • Save in a Suitable Format: Save your design in a high-resolution format like PNG or TIFF, ensuring a crisp and detailed print.
  3. Print the DTF Transfer:

    • Load DTF Film: Place the DTF film into your DTF printer, ensuring it's loaded correctly according to the printer's instructions. Typically, you'll print on the coated side of the film.
    • Print the Design: Use your DTF printing software to print the mirrored design onto the film. The printer will usually print a white underbase first, followed by the colors.
  4. Apply Adhesive Powder:

    • Even Application: Immediately after printing, evenly apply DTF adhesive powder to the wet ink on the film. You can do this manually (with a tray and shaker) or with an automatic shaker machine.
    • Remove Excess Powder: Gently shake off any excess powder. You can also use a soft brush to remove powder from areas where it's not needed.
    • Cure the Powder: Melt the adhesive powder using a heat press, flash dryer, or a dedicated DTF curing oven. The powder should melt and create a slightly glossy, even layer. This step is crucial for proper adhesion to the garment.
  5. Prepare the Garment:

    • Pre-Press the Shirt: Use your heat press to pre-press the shirt for a few seconds to remove any wrinkles and moisture. This will also help the transfer adhere properly.
  6. Position the DTF Transfer:

    • Placement: Carefully position the DTF transfer, adhesive side down, onto the shirt where you want the design to be. Make sure it's aligned correctly.
  7. Apply the Heat Press:

    • Temperature and Time: Use a heat press to apply heat and pressure to the transfer. The specific temperature and time will vary depending on the DTF film and adhesive you're using, but a common starting point is around 300-320°F (149-160°C) for 10-15 seconds. Consult the manufacturer's instructions for the best settings.
    • Pressure: Apply medium to firm pressure.
  8. Allow the Transfer to Cool:

    • Cool Peel or Hot Peel: Depending on the type of DTF film used, you'll either peel the carrier sheet while it's hot (hot peel) or after it has cooled down completely (cold peel). Again, check the manufacturer's instructions for your specific film. Cold peel is generally recommended for better durability.
  9. Peel the Carrier Sheet:

    • Carefully Peel: Gently peel the carrier sheet away from the shirt. If the design lifts or doesn't seem to be adhering properly, repress it for a few more seconds.
  10. Final Press (Optional):

    • Add Durability: For increased durability and a softer feel, you can repress the design for a few seconds with parchment paper or a Teflon sheet covering it.

Important Considerations:

  • DTF Printer: A dedicated DTF printer is essential for creating high-quality transfers.
  • DTF Ink: You must use DTF-specific inks, which are designed to work with the film and adhesive powder.
  • DTF Film: Use DTF film specifically designed for DTF printing.
  • Adhesive Powder: The quality of the adhesive powder affects the durability and washability of the transfer.
  • Heat Press: A high-quality heat press with even heat distribution is crucial for successful transfers.
  • Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation when applying the adhesive powder, as it can be harmful if inhaled.

By following these steps, you can create high-quality, durable DTF shirts. Always refer to the specific instructions provided by the manufacturers of your DTF supplies for optimal results.
