How Did Trademe Start?

Published in E-commerce History 1 min read

Trade Me began its journey officially launching in March 1999 in New Zealand. It started as a small venture aiming to create an online marketplace.

The Humble Beginnings

Trade Me didn't emerge as a large corporate entity. Its inception was much more modest:

  • Launch Date: March 1999
  • Initial Team: It started with just four employees.
  • First Members: The very first users, totaling 20 members, were primarily founder Sam's friends and family.

Early Growth Efforts

With a strong desire to see the platform succeed and attract more users beyond the initial circle, founder Sam undertook direct and hands-on promotional activities. According to reports, to encourage more people to join and use the site, Sam would letterbox drop, send emails and drive around Wellington in his bright green Holden with 'Trade Me' signwriting. These grassroots efforts were crucial in getting the word out and building the initial user base.

Trade Me's start was characterized by a small team, a tight-knit initial community, and dedicated personal efforts by the founder to drive awareness and membership.
