How Do You Clear a Child's Ear?

Published in Ear Care 3 mins read

Clearing a child's ear depends on the cause of the blockage, but generally involves encouraging drainage or softening and removing earwax.

Here's a breakdown of methods, considering potential causes:

  • Water in the Ear: This is a common issue after swimming or bathing.

    • Tilting: Have the child tilt their head to the side with the affected ear facing down. Gently jiggle the earlobe to help water escape.
    • Suction: Softly create a suction by cupping your hand over the ear and then quickly removing it.
    • Warm Air: Use a hairdryer on a low, cool setting to gently blow air into the ear from a distance.
  • Earwax Blockage: Earwax (cerumen) is natural, but sometimes it builds up and causes a blockage. Avoid using cotton swabs as they can push the wax further in.

    • Warm Mineral Oil or Saline Drops: Direct a small amount of warmed (not hot!) mineral oil or saline drops into the ear canal. Have the child lie on their side with the affected ear facing up for 5-10 minutes. Then, have them tilt their head to drain the ear. Gently dry the outer ear with a towel.
    • Shower Steam: The steam from a warm shower can help soften earwax.
    • Over-the-Counter Wax Softeners: Follow the instructions on the package of an over-the-counter earwax softener.
    • Irrigation: Only if comfortable and if there is no suspicion of a perforated eardrum: Use a bulb syringe with lukewarm water to gently irrigate the ear canal. Tilt the head to allow the water and softened wax to drain.
  • When to See a Doctor:

    • If home remedies are ineffective after a few days.
    • If the child experiences pain, fever, hearing loss, or drainage from the ear.
    • If you suspect a foreign object is lodged in the ear. Do not attempt to remove a foreign object yourself!
    • If the child has had ear tubes placed.

Important Considerations:

  • Never insert anything into the ear canal (other than ear drops as directed). Cotton swabs are a common culprit for impacting earwax.
  • Avoid ear candling. It is not an effective or safe method for removing earwax.
  • Consult a doctor if you are unsure about the cause of the blockage or if symptoms persist.

By using gentle techniques and seeking professional help when needed, you can effectively and safely clear your child's ear.
