While you can kiss someone's ear, it's not always advisable. According to a professor of audiology at Hofstra University, the ear is one place you should never kiss, especially babies (29-Mar-2012).
Why kissing someone's ear might not be a good idea:
- Hygiene: The mouth contains bacteria that, while typically harmless on skin, can cause infections if introduced into the ear canal, especially if there's a cut or abrasion.
- Pressure: The pressure from a kiss can potentially harm the eardrum. This is especially true for babies, whose ears are more delicate.
- General Discomfort: Some people are simply ticklish or sensitive around their ears, making the experience unpleasant.
When it might be okay:
If the person consents and is comfortable with it and if proper hygiene is maintained, kissing an ear lobe is considered safe.
