Does Ear Wax Move?

Published in Ear Health 1 min read

Yes, ear wax naturally moves from the inner ear canal to the outer ear.

This movement is part of the ear's self-cleaning process. Special glands within the ear produce earwax, a combination of secretions and dead skin cells. As new skin cells grow, they migrate outwards, carrying the earwax along with them. This process slowly pushes the earwax towards the opening of the ear canal. Furthermore, jaw movements, such as talking and chewing, also aid in the movement of earwax. This natural migration usually results in the earwax drying up and flaking out of the ear.
