How to Remove Smelly Ear Wax?

Published in Ear Hygiene 3 mins read

To remove smelly ear wax safely at home, soften the wax, flush it out gently, and thoroughly dry the ear canal.

Here's a step-by-step guide:

1. Soften the Ear Wax

Use an eyedropper to apply one of the following softening agents into the affected ear:

  • Baby oil: A readily available and gentle option.
  • Hydrogen peroxide (3%): Use with caution, as it can sometimes irritate sensitive ears.
  • Glycerin: A common ingredient in ear wax removal products.
  • Mineral oil: An effective lubricant for softening wax.

Instructions:

  1. Tilt your head so the affected ear faces upward.
  2. Place a few drops of your chosen softening agent into the ear canal.
  3. Keep your head tilted for a few minutes to allow the drops to penetrate the wax.

2. Irrigate the Ear Canal

A couple of days after softening the wax, gently flush it out with warm water using a rubber bulb syringe.

Instructions:

  1. Tilt your head with the treated ear facing up.
  2. Using a rubber bulb syringe, gently squirt warm (not hot) water into your ear canal. Avoid using high pressure.
  3. Tip your head to the side to allow the water and dislodged wax to drain out. You can use a basin or towel to catch the drainage.

3. Dry the Ear

After irrigating, thoroughly dry your outer ear canal.

Instructions:

  1. Use a clean towel to gently pat dry the outside of your ear.
  2. A blow dryer on the lowest and coolest setting can be used to further dry the ear canal, holding it a safe distance away.

Important Considerations:

  • Consult a Doctor: If you experience pain, drainage, or hearing loss after attempting ear wax removal, seek medical attention from a doctor or audiologist.
  • Don't Use Cotton Swabs: Avoid inserting cotton swabs (Q-tips) into your ear canal, as they can push the wax further in and potentially damage your eardrum.
  • Avoid Ear Candling: Ear candling is not an effective or safe method for ear wax removal.
  • Ear Wax Color and Smell: While smelly ear wax can be normal, a sudden change in odor or color (especially if accompanied by pain or discharge) could indicate an infection.

By following these steps carefully, you can safely and effectively remove smelly ear wax at home. Remember to be gentle and consult a doctor if you experience any complications.
