Humans live in the troposphere, the lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere. This is where all weather conditions occur, including rain, snow, wind, and clouds.
The troposphere extends from the Earth's surface up to about 7 miles (11 kilometers) high. While the air gets thinner as you go higher, the troposphere contains the majority of the atmosphere's mass and is where we breathe.
The other layers of the atmosphere are the stratosphere, mesosphere, and thermosphere. The stratosphere is where the ozone layer is found, which protects us from harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. The mesosphere is where most meteors burn up, and the thermosphere is the outermost layer, characterized by very high temperatures.
