The first layer of the Earth is the crust. It's the thin, rocky outer layer that we live on. The crust is relatively thin compared to the other layers, ranging in thickness from about 5 to 70 kilometers. It's made up of various types of rocks, including granite, basalt, and sedimentary rocks.
The crust is divided into two main types:
- Continental crust: This is thicker and less dense, making up the landmasses.
- Oceanic crust: This is thinner and denser, forming the ocean floor.
The crust is constantly changing due to tectonic plates moving and colliding. This movement causes earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountain formation.
