Similar to the U.S. system, the Guatemalan education system is formally organized into a sequence of three main levels or tiers. This tiered division provides a comparable framework for student progression through their academic careers.
The three primary tiers are:
- Primary School: The initial stage of formal education.
- Secondary School: The subsequent level following primary education.
- University (Tertiary): The post-secondary or higher education level.
A direct parallel exists in the pathway to higher education: All students that graduate from secondary school in Guatemala are eligible to study at the university level, much like earning a high school diploma in the U.S. typically qualifies students for college or university admission.
