How can I rewire a lamp?

Published in Electrical Repair 3 mins read

Rewiring a lamp is a straightforward process involving replacing the electrical cord and socket to ensure safety and functionality. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Steps to Rewire a Lamp

  1. Safety First: Unplug the Lamp. Before you begin, make absolutely sure the lamp is disconnected from any power source. This is crucial to prevent electric shock.

  2. Access the Socket. Locate the lamp's socket. You'll usually find a mechanism to loosen or remove the socket cover. This may involve squeezing the socket or pushing a button/tab.

  3. Remove the Old Socket. Once the socket cover is off, you'll see the wiring connections. Note how the old wires are attached for reference (or take a picture!). Loosen the screws holding the wires to the socket terminals and detach the old socket.

  4. Cut the Old Wires (If Necessary). If the wires are frayed or damaged, use wire cutters to cut them cleanly. You'll need to expose fresh wire for the new connection. Remember to only cut the wires after the lamp is unplugged and the socket is removed.

  5. Prepare the New Wire:

    • Feed the Wire: Thread the new lamp wire through the base of the lamp and up to the socket area.
    • Separate and Knot the Wires: At the end of the wire, separate the two strands (usually by cutting along the groove between them for about 2 inches). Tie an Underwriter's Knot (also known as an UL knot or strain relief knot) to prevent the wires from being pulled out of the socket if the cord is tugged. This knot is typically tied by looping each wire around the other and pulling them tight. Many lamps skip this knot, but it's good practice for safety.
    • Strip the Wire Ends: Use wire strippers to remove about ½ inch of insulation from the end of each wire.
  6. Connect the Wires.

    • Identify Terminals: Look at the new socket. One terminal will often be silver (neutral) and the other brass (hot). The wire with ridges or markings is generally the neutral wire, and the smooth wire is the hot wire.
    • Attach Wires to Terminals: Wrap the exposed end of each wire clockwise around the appropriate screw terminal. Tighten the screws securely. Ensure no stray wire strands are sticking out.
  7. Reassemble the Socket. Carefully tuck the wires into the socket housing. Snap the socket shell back into place.

  8. Test the Lamp. Plug the lamp into a working outlet and turn it on. If it doesn't work, double-check your wiring connections and make sure the bulb is good. If it still doesn't work, consult a qualified electrician.

Important Safety Considerations:

  • Always unplug the lamp before starting any work.
  • Use the correct gauge of wire for the lamp's wattage. Typically, 18-gauge wire is suitable for most lamps.
  • If you are unsure about any step, consult a qualified electrician.
  • Check the lamp for any damage before plugging it in after rewiring.

By following these steps carefully, you can safely and effectively rewire a lamp.
