How to Check Earthing?

Checking earthing, or grounding, is crucial for electrical safety. Here's how you can check earthing using a multimeter and a bulb test:

Method 1: Multimeter Test

  1. Set the Multimeter: Set your multimeter to measure AC voltage (VAC).

  2. Test between Phase and Neutral: Measure the voltage between the phase (live) wire and the neutral wire. This should be close to your standard voltage (e.g., 220-240V in many countries, or 110-120V in others).

  3. Test between Phase and Earth: Measure the voltage between the phase (live) wire and the earth (ground) wire. This should be very close to the voltage you measured between phase and neutral. A significant difference indicates a problem with your earthing.

  4. Test between Neutral and Earth: Measure the voltage between the neutral wire and the earth (ground) wire. Ideally, this voltage should be very low, close to 0V. A higher voltage suggests a faulty earthing system.

Method 2: Bulb Test (Caution Required)

Important Safety Note: This method involves working with live electricity. If you are not comfortable or familiar with electrical work, do not attempt this test. Hire a qualified electrician.

  1. Prepare the Circuit: You'll need a light bulb (e.g., a 100W bulb) with a holder and connecting wires.

  2. Connect Phase and Neutral: Connect the light bulb between the phase (live) and neutral terminals of an outlet. The bulb should light up with normal brightness.

  3. Connect Phase and Earth: Carefully connect the light bulb between the phase (live) terminal and the earth (ground) terminal of the same outlet.

  4. Observe the Brightness:

    • Bright Glow: If the bulb glows brightly, similar to when connected between phase and neutral, the earthing is likely adequate.
    • Dim or Flickering Glow: If the bulb glows dimly or flickers, the earthing is likely faulty. The earthing system is not providing a low-resistance path to ground.
    • No Glow: No glow indicates a complete lack of earthing connection.

Explanation: In a properly earthed system, the earth wire provides a low-resistance path back to the source. When you connect the bulb between phase and earth, a large current should flow, causing the bulb to light up brightly. A poor earth connection restricts the current flow, resulting in a dim or flickering bulb.
