How to install a box extender?

Published in Electrical Work 3 mins read

Installing an electrical box extender is a straightforward process used when the junction box is recessed too far behind the wall surface. Here's a step-by-step guide based on common practice and the provided reference:

Why Use a Box Extender?

Electrical codes require outlets and switches to be flush or slightly raised from the wall surface for safety and proper cover plate installation. When adding paneling, tile, or other thick wall coverings, the existing box may end up too deep. A box extender brings the box opening forward to meet the new surface.

Installation Steps

Follow these steps carefully to install an electrical box extender:

Step 1: Prioritize Safety - Shut Off Power

  • Action: Locate the main circuit breaker panel for your home.
  • Action: Find the breaker that controls the power to the room or specific circuit where you will be working.
  • Action: Shut the power for the room off at the main circuit breaker. This is the most critical safety step to prevent electric shock.
  • Verification: Use a non-contact voltage tester to confirm the power is off at the outlet or switch location before proceeding.

Step 2: Access the Electrical Device

  • Action: Remove the switch or outlet cover. You'll typically need a screwdriver (flat-head or Phillips, depending on the screws) to unscrew the cover plate.
  • Action: Carefully unscrew the outlet or switch device itself from the electrical box. Do not disconnect any wires; gently pull the device forward out of the box while the wires remain attached.

Step 3: Position the Extender

  • Action: Take the electrical box extender.
  • Action: Slide the electrical box extender around the outlet or switch device, guiding the device wires and the device itself through the extender's opening.
  • Action: Push the extender flush against the existing electrical box inside the wall, effectively making the box opening deeper and closer to the new wall surface.

Step 4: Re-attach the Device

  • Action: Carefully push the outlet or switch device back into the box extender.
  • Action: Using the long screws that came with the extender, re-attach the outlet or switch device by screwing it into the threaded holes of the original electrical box, passing through the extender. These longer screws are essential because the extender adds depth.
  • Verification: Ensure the device sits securely within the extender and is flush with the new wall surface.

After the device is securely re-attached, you can install the new cover plate that matches your wall finish.

Important Considerations

  • Ensure the box extender is the correct size and type for your existing electrical box (e.g., single gang, double gang, plastic, metal).
  • Always use the longer screws provided with the extender kit.
  • If you are unsure about any step or feel uncomfortable working with electricity, it is best to consult a qualified electrician.
