1. Using Hotswap Sockets

Hotswap sockets allow you to easily insert and remove switches without soldering. This is a popular method for custom mechanical keyboards.

  • Preparation: Ensure the switch's pins are straight to facilitate smooth insertion.
  • Insertion: Carefully insert the switch pins through the switch plate (if applicable) and into the hotswap socket on the PCB.
  • Support: While inserting, support the bottom of the socket with your thumb to prevent it from being pushed out of place.
  • Verification: Ensure the switch sits flush against the switch plate (if applicable) and is securely seated in the socket.

2. Soldering Directly to the PCB

Soldering provides a permanent and reliable connection between the switch and the PCB.

  • Preparation: Clean the switch pins and PCB pads to ensure good solder adhesion. Apply flux to the PCB pads.
  • Placement: Insert the switch pins into the corresponding holes on the PCB.
  • Soldering: Heat the PCB pad and switch pin simultaneously with a soldering iron, and then apply solder. Ensure the solder flows evenly around the pin and pad.
