How to Disassemble a Connecting Rod?

Published in Engine Repair 4 mins read

Disassembling a connecting rod generally involves separating it from the crankshaft and then taking apart its individual components. The precise method depends on the connecting rod's design and the engine type. Here's a general procedure:

Steps for Disassembling a Connecting Rod

  1. Remove the Connecting Rod Cap: This is the part that clamps the connecting rod around the crankshaft journal.

    • Locate the bolts or nuts securing the cap to the connecting rod.
    • Use the appropriate wrench or socket to loosen and remove them.
    • Carefully separate the cap from the connecting rod. Keep track of the cap's orientation - it must be reinstalled in the same direction. Many caps are marked.
  2. Separate the Connecting Rod from the Crankshaft: Once the cap is removed, you should be able to slide the connecting rod off the crankshaft journal.

  3. Disassemble the Piston Pin (Wrist Pin): This connects the connecting rod to the piston. There are a few types of piston pin retention:

    • Press-fit: The pin is tightly pressed into the connecting rod. To remove, you'll need a press and appropriate adapters to support the connecting rod and press the pin out. This is often best left to a machine shop. Apply heat to the connecting rod eye (small end) before pressing can help.

    • Floating Pin with Circlips: These pins are free to rotate in both the piston and the connecting rod. Circlips (small wire retaining rings) are located in grooves in the piston pin bore, preventing the pin from drifting out.

      • Use circlip pliers to compress and remove the circlips from both sides of the piston pin bore in the piston.
      • Once the circlips are removed, you can usually push the piston pin out by hand. If it's tight, gentle tapping with a soft-faced hammer might be necessary. Applying heat can help.
    • Piston Pin with Bolt: Some connecting rods are bolted to the piston pin directly. Undo the bolt and withdraw the pin.

  4. Remove any Bearings or Bushings: The connecting rod big end (the end that connects to the crankshaft) may have bearing inserts. Remove these for inspection. The small end (the end that connects to the piston) might have a bushing. Bushings are usually press-fit. If replacement is needed, pressing out the old bushing and pressing in a new one is usually required.

Important Considerations:

  • Marking Components: Before disassembly, it is crucial to mark the connecting rod and cap with a matching number or punch mark. This ensures that they are reassembled in the same orientation and with the correct matching parts.
  • Cleanliness: Keep all components clean during disassembly. Use a solvent to clean the connecting rod, crankshaft journal and other parts.
  • Inspection: Inspect all components for wear or damage. Check the connecting rod for cracks, bends, or other signs of stress. Check the bearing surfaces for scoring or excessive wear. Check the piston pin bore for ovalization. Replace any damaged components.
  • Press Work: Be extremely careful with press-fit components. Incorrect support or excessive force can damage the connecting rod.

By following these steps and taking the necessary precautions, you can safely and effectively disassemble a connecting rod. If unsure about any step, consult a qualified mechanic or refer to the engine's service manual.
