What is an ENT balance test?

Published in ENT Balance Test 2 mins read

An ENT balance test, also known as a vestibular balance test or vestibular testing, is a series of tests used to evaluate balance disorders. These tests are performed by an otolaryngologist (ENT doctor) to determine if there is a problem with the inner ear, which is responsible for maintaining balance. The tests can also help identify problems in the central nervous system that affect balance.

Here are some common types of ENT balance tests:

  • Videonystagmography (VNG): This test measures eye movements to evaluate central motor functions and the inner ear. It can detect if there is an underlying vestibular disorder causing balance problems and show which ear(s) are affected.
  • Electronystagmography (ENG): This test uses electrodes placed near the eyes to measure eye movements. It is similar to VNG but does not use video recording.
  • Posturography: This test evaluates how the body maintains balance while standing on a platform that moves in different directions.
  • Rotary Chair Testing: This test measures how the body responds to spinning.
  • Caloric Testing: This test uses water or air to stimulate the inner ear and observe the body's response.

These tests are generally quick, painless, and help diagnose and evaluate various hearing and balance disorders.
