Can DNS Be Cured?

Published in ENT Health 2 mins read

DNS, referring to a deviated nasal septum, isn't typically considered a disease to be "cured," but rather a structural issue that can be managed or corrected. Whether it needs correction depends on the severity of symptoms.

Understanding Deviated Nasal Septum (DNS)

A deviated nasal septum (DNS) occurs when the nasal septum, the cartilage and bone that divides the nasal cavity in half, is significantly displaced to one side.

Symptoms and Severity

Many people have a mild deviation and experience no symptoms. For these individuals, no treatment is necessary. However, a more severe deviation can cause:

  • Difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Nasal congestion
  • Frequent nosebleeds
  • Facial pain
  • Sinus infections
  • Headaches
  • Snoring

Management Options

Treatment for a deviated septum aims to alleviate symptoms and improve breathing. Options include:

  • Medications:
    • Decongestants: Help reduce nasal tissue swelling.
    • Antihistamines: Reduce allergy symptoms that can contribute to congestion.
    • Nasal steroid sprays: Reduce inflammation in the nasal passages.
  • Surgery (Septoplasty): If medications don't provide adequate relief or the deviation is severe, septoplasty is a surgical procedure to straighten the nasal septum. Septoplasty is not a "cure" but more of a correction of the physical problem. The goal is to improve airflow and reduce breathing difficulties. In many cases, this resolves the related symptoms.

When is Surgery Necessary?

Surgery is usually recommended if:

  • Nasal obstruction significantly impairs breathing.
  • Recurrent sinus infections are linked to the deviated septum.
  • Medications are ineffective at managing symptoms.

In essence, while DNS itself isn't "cured" in the traditional sense, its problematic symptoms can be effectively managed with medication or corrected surgically. The decision to pursue treatment depends on the impact the deviation has on an individual's quality of life.
