The animal that has approximately 12,000 eyes is the monarch butterfly.
Monarch butterflies possess compound eyes, a type of eye consisting of numerous individual visual receptors called ommatidia. Each ommatidium functions as an independent visual unit. The thousands of ommatidia working together provide the butterfly with a mosaic-like view of the world and excellent motion detection.
These butterflies also have simple eyes, in addition to compound eyes, that allow them to see and process the brightness of light.
