HSL is an intracellular neutral lipase that catalyzes the hydrolysis of triglycerides, diglycerides, monoglycerides, and cholesteryl esters. It's considered the rate-limiting enzyme in lipolysis, the process of breaking down triglycerides into glycerol and fatty acids. These products are then released from the cell into the circulation to be used by other tissues for energy.

  • Lipolysis: HSL's primary function is to initiate the breakdown of stored triglycerides (fats) in adipose tissue (fat tissue). This process releases fatty acids into the bloodstream.
