What is Yugoslavia Called Now?

Published in European History 1 min read

Yugoslavia no longer exists as a single country. It dissolved into several independent nations.

Following the dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the remaining republics of Serbia and Montenegro formed the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1992. This entity underwent a name change in 2003 to Serbia and Montenegro. However, even this union was short-lived.

Serbia and Montenegro dissolved in 2006, resulting in the independent nations we know today.

Therefore, Yugoslavia is now divided into the following independent countries:

  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Croatia
  • North Macedonia
  • Montenegro
  • Serbia
  • Slovenia
  • Kosovo (whose status is disputed)

In summary, the territory that once constituted Yugoslavia is now made up of several independent countries, each with its own distinct identity and government. It is incorrect to refer to any single existing nation as "Yugoslavia."
